Ever since I moved to Sri Lanka earlier this year, I have wanted to visit Jaffna and other war-affected parts of the country. I personally cannot imagine living in constant fear of being shot or killed in a bomb blast.
Peace is one of the most essential aspects of a stable society. Peace provides the basis for a prosperous economy and freedom whereas war and conflict disrupt everything related to the livelihoods of the people.
As part of our assignment, we first went to the Agriculture Department where we interviewed the Deputy Secretary about the assistance provided by the government to the farmers. He shared with us interesting details about the amount of onions cultivated by farmers in Jaffna and the efforts undertaken by the government to meet the national demand for onions.
Our next stop was a grapes farm. Cultivators at the farm explained about the effort and care that goes into cultivating grapes. They also raised concerns over the lack of interest shown by the younger generation in cultivating grapes.
After interviewing the grape farmers, we went to the onion fields. The onion farmers explained the difficulties faced by them, including the recent price hike of fuel and fertilisers.
